About visa

The family may apply simultaneously with the main applicant. But if they didn’t have an opportunity to apply for a visa (and you have already exchanged the visa for a residence permit) or your residence permit was initially obtained in Portugal, then you can request from AIMA a document for family reunification, with which relatives can apply to the consulate for a D6 visa.

The family can also come to Portugal on a tourist visa (or under a visa-free regime) and reunite with you in Portugal under Article 98.2.

NIF and NISS are not mandatory documents for family members. However, if you submit them to AIMA, these numbers will be printed on the backside of the card, which is convenient.

Which family members are eligible for Portugal family reunification visa?
  • The spouse
  • Children under 18 years
  • Children over 18 already studying at a Portuguese school or university and are financially dependent on you
  • Adopted children
  • Siblings under your official custody
  • Parents under 65 years if they are financially dependent on you
  • Parents over 65 years

See Portugal family visa requirements in details below.

💡 The fastest and easiest way to get residence permits for your family is to apply simultaneously at the consulate.

If you want to request a certificate from AIMA for D6 visa application for your family, or apply for reunification from within Portugal you will need to catch a slot. AIMA opens slots for reunions very rarely.

Check-list for family reunification documents

  • Confirmation of the right to family reunification of a foreign citizen with a residence permit
  • Certificates of kinship not older than 6 months, with apostille and translation
  • Passport
  • Rental contract
  • Proof of income - salary slips, invoices (recibo verde), savings in your account. Minimum requirement - 820 € (as for 2024) for the main applicant + 50% for spouse + 30% for a child
  • Authorization from a family member for a criminal record check in Portugal, if he/she has been in the national territory for more than one year in the last 5 years (except for children under 16 years of age)
  • Certificate of no criminal record from countries where the applicants have resided for more than one year.
  • Proof of legal entry into the national territory

Average 98.2 process

1

You get a D visa or residence permit

The reunification is easier if you get D visas for the family in the consulate. Your family members also may come to Portugal as tourists.

2

Book an appointment with immigration office

Call +351-217-115-000 and schedule a visit for each family member ( art 98.2). This may take time - sometimes you have to wait for slots.

3

Your family applies for residentship at AIMA

On the scheduled dates, your family members come to the immigration office, submit their documents, and submit fingerprints.

4

Family members get residence permits

Your family members will receive their ID cards via mail within 2-12 weeks after visiting AIMA.

Relocation made affordable, transparent and easy

Migrun is the greatest service for relocation – I have received my residence permit in Spain as a digital nomad in less than 1.5 months – from initiation to approval. The best thing about Migrun – they have many affordable solutions combined with lots of free guides, so you get the best value for your money. Plus you never feel pressured to pay more than you really need. Which is truly the mission of the company – to make relocation affordable, transparent and easy. Special thanks to Irina Degtyareva for helping with my case and questions! Looking forward to work with the Migrun team further. Many thanks!

Immigration service with emphatic and fair approach

My immigration to Portugal wouldn't happen if not for Migrun. First, they have a LOT of free guides of how to collect documents for different visas and residency types + a great chat with a lot of immigrants sharing their experience. A year ago it was a very simple website and a chat of a couple thousands - now an extensive platform and a family of useful chats on Portugal the largest being 10K people. I have collected all documents for D7 visa with their help for free.Later I changed my mind and decided to apply for residency as highly-qualified professional from inside of Portugal and did so with a great help of Migrun. Today I have received my residency card.Business with emphatic approach - unlike many other immigration services who just try to rip you off using your lack of knowledge. All people in Migrun have always been friendly, honest and trying to do their best.
